Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of access tunnels down to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
